What is happening in Turkey in 1871CE

The last few decades have seen the Ottoman empire take important steps to modernize itself with a wide ranging series of measures, known as the “Tanzimat Reforms”. These have built on the foundations laid by Mahmud II, and have affected the army and the administration, education, which has been westernised and expanded, and the law, with the promulgation of a series of European-style law codes. At the same time, central government authority has been re-imposed on much of Syria and Iraq.
