What is happening in France in 1914CE

Since 1871, France has been governed by the parliamentary democracy of the Third Republic. This has been characterized by a succession of weak, short-lived administrations, but it has presided over a period of unprecedented economic expansion and a brilliant cultural flowering. This can be seen most notably in the works of Impressionist painters and sculptors such as Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Rodin and a host of others.

Overseas, France has acquired a huge empire in West Africa, South East Asia and the Pacific Ocean.
