The city-states and kingdoms of Palestine were independent and prosperous until the mid-8th century BC, when the region fell under Assyrian domination. More conquerors followed – Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and Romans.
It was under foreign occupation that the great monotheistic religions of Judaism and Christianity developed.
