What are TimeMaps?

There are 2 types of TimeMap: Interactive TimeMaps for teachers and students to use as teaching or study aids; and the TimeMap of World History, which is a FREE resource that allows an easy way of navigating around world history and visualising where it took place.

A TimeMap depicts a set of features or areas, at various points over a period of time. These fit together to form a map-timeline, which shows the history of a particular topic. This might be a territory, or a structure, or an event - a chemical reaction, perhaps, or the workings of a machine.

For the purposes of the TimeMap of World History, the topics all relate to human history at a world, regional or national level. At the top level, a timemap of the history of the world provides the spine of the Atlas of World History. Hanging off this is a set of timelines on the major regions of the world, which themselves provide structure to the timelines on individual countries or sub-regions.

Interactive TimeMaps take a deeper look at the historical topic with the inclusion of animations, images, advanced features, and rich text to help create the full picture and provide a new and stimulating way to learn about a historical topic.
