The period of effective Zhou rule over China lasted from 1122 BC to 771 BC.
The Zhou dynasty ruled China from 1122 BC to 256 BC. In 771 BC, however, the Zhou capital was sacked by barbarian invaders, and this event marked the end of effective Zhou rule over a wide area. The era of Zhou rule gave way to the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history.
