The Celts settled much of western Europe from the eighth century BC.
The Celts were a warlike people, much feared by the Romans. They settled France, Britain, northern Spain, northern Italy, Austria and parts of central Europe in the centuries after 800 BC. Most of them were eventually brought under Roman control.
