The city of Carthage is known to history as the great adversary of Rome.
The city of Carthage was founded in 814 BC (according to Roman legend), by colonists from the Phoenician city of Tyre. Its location on the north coast of Africa was very favourable to trade, and it was soon a major maritime power. It is most famous for the three wars it fought against Rome (264-241 BC, 218-202 BC, and 149-146 BC). Under its brilliant general, Hannibal, the Carthaginians came near to defeating the Romans; however, they failed to do so, to their great cost. The city was finally destroyed by a Roman army in 146.
